             Dated the 22nd December, 2004.

Dear Secretary,

Sub: Surveillance of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in the country – Regarding.

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) continues to circulate in the South East Asian region causing fresh outbreaks with renewed vigour. As the winter is setting up – the season/climate being conducive to this virus to proliferate, we may have to be pro-active in preventing the ingress of the disease and in the event of any outbreak, ready to tackle with the situation.

In order to update the position in the country, sero-surveillance may have to be undertaken on continuous basis for which the serum samples of poultry may be collected randomly and a representative sample sent to HSADL, Bhopal for testing. In case of mortality of birds due to some outbreak, the morbid material from such birds may also be sent to Bhopal to rule out the disease in the country.

All other precautionary measures that have been circulated to the states from time to time may be undertaken including convening the meeting of State Animal Disease Emergency Committee (SADEC) and interacting with the poultry industry for monitoring and surveillance of the poultry diseases.

Yours sincerely,

(Nita Chowdhury)
